Nature Preserve
The Gilliland Nature Preserve Wetland was established in 2021 and includes a two-acre wetland, six acres of mature forest, 1.5 acres of new tree planting and nearly seven acres of upland prairie habitat. This site also has a 0.4-mile grass walking path. Directly to the east of the wetland property is the original 80-acre Gilliland Nature Preserve with multiple grass walking paths and a small parking lot with signage.
More About the Wetlands
Gilliland Nature Preserve Wetland site is owned by the Grand Lake St. Marys Lake Facilities Authority and the original Gilliland Nature Preserve is owned by the Franklin Township Trustees. The wetland is designed to treat water entering Grand Lake St. Marys. The site receives passive flow into the wetland and can exchange water with the lake. Its prime location aids in increasing wildlife diversity in the Grand Lake St. Mary Region.
The project was made possible by Clean Ohio Greenspace funding, US and Ohio EPA Section 319 funding, Susan Gilliland and Jean Gilliland. Mercer Soil and Water Conservation District, Fenson Contracting, LLC, and Reforestation and Wildlife Services all worked on this project.
