Southwest Greenspace sits along US Route 127 and is adjacent to the Ohio Department of Natural Resource’s Mercer Wildlife Area.  It includes a constructed one-acre settling pool and a four-acre wetland, which were established in 2024.  In 2025, a grass walking path around the site, estimated at 0.75 miles will be added.

More About the Wetlands

Southwest Greenspace was acquired by the Grand Lake St. Marys Lake Facilities Authority in 2020.  It was the former home of the “Southbay Motel,” for which it is commonly named.  Water is pumped from Monroe Creek into the constructed wetlands for treatment (i.e. nutrient removal).  The wetlands operate from April through October of each year and approximately 0.5 million gallons of water per day is pumped into the treatment wetland.

The project was made possible by Clean Ohio Greenspace funding and H2Ohio funding through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.  Mercer Soil and Water Conservation District and Kahlig Dozing and Excavating worked on this project.
