Vegetated Biofilter
Beaver Creek Vegetated Biofilter was created in 2018 to filter water from Beaver Creek prior to entering Grand Lake St. Marys. It includes 32 acres of shallow wetland cells, designed to minimize open and flowing water from the site and is densely vegetated. The site includes 1.3 miles of grass and gravel walking trail. As part of the treatment plan at the Montezuma Club Island Wastewater Treatment plan, there is an additional 12 acres of treatment wetland nearby.
More About the Wetlands
Owned by the Mercer County Commissioners, the Beaver Creek Vegetated Biofilter can treat up to one million gallons of water per day. Water is pumped from Beaver Creek and operates from April through October of each year. The nutrient efficacy of the site is published each year (link to wetland summary). The site is designed in a manner to avoid bird congregation and attraction due to the proximity of the Lakefield Airport.
The project was made possible by US and Ohio EPA Section 319 funding and many generous local donors. Access Engineering, KCI Associates, Braun Excavating, LLC, Shinn Brothers, Inc. and VTF Excavation, LLC all worked on this project.
