Chickasaw Creek
Stream Restoration & Wetlands
Chickasaw Creek Stream Restoration & Wetlands was established in 2024 and includes nearly 4,000 lineal feet of stream restoration on Little Chickasaw Creek and approximately 15 acres of wetland. In 2025, a walking path will be added to the site that is estimated to be a 0.75-mile down-and-back path. A large observation mound on-site allows for great views of the newly restored site as is sits near the mouth of Grand Lake St. Marys. The site is also home to a long-term bald eagles nest.
More About the Wetlands
Owned by the Grand Lake St. Marys Lake Facilities Authority and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife, the site treats nearly all flows from Little Chickasaw Creek. Additionally, up to 1.0 million gallons of water is pumped from Big Chickasaw Creek into the wetlands on the west side of Little Chickasaw Creek for treatment from April to October. Monitoring of nutrient removals at the site began in 2024 and will continue each year (link to summary).
The project was made possible by a State Capital Improvement grant, Clean Ohio Greenspace funding, and US and Ohio EPA Section 319 funding. Access Engineering, MAD Scientist Associates, and VTF Excavation, LLC all worked on this project.
